A City with A Small Town Feel – Adelaide, Australia

  Just like how Hong Kong was never part of my original backpacking plan, Adelaide ended up being an add-on after all my most important bookings were made. This is all due to the fact that I ended up scoring myself a destination wedding last minute! Wait until Monday when I’ll be posting the photos! Having to reroute myself to Adelaide ended up being an opportunity that I’m glad I didn’t miss. I only got to spend 3 days there and after I left, I desperately wanted to stay much longer. Technically Adelaide is a city but it very much has a small town feel to it.  It’s overwhelming small (compared to what I’m used to in Toronto) and pretty easy to navigate. I stayed in this late 19-century apartment complex that was renovated beautifully into a hostel, which was just around the block from the beach.  I arrived closer to sunset but ended up waiting a few hours for the sun to go down as I had no idea that during that time of the year, Adelaide experiences its’ sunset around 9pm. The most exciting thing happening other then the sun finally making its dramatic and long awaited set, was getting caught in seagull madness due to a little mischief deciding it was a good idea for him to feed the birds.  I thought I had looked ridiculous when I jumped for cover from potential bird poop but found myself not alone in this action.  All I learned from that day was that Adelaide has some cool sunsets and seagulls in Australia are just as annoying as seagulls in Canada.
